Power Electronics is the technology associated with the efficient conversion, control and conditioning of electric energy from the source to the load. Power Electronics is a major thrust area of C-DAC and a dedicated group in CDAC-Thiruvananthapuram, from its inception is engaged in research, development, deployment and technology proliferation activities related to power electronics technology. The major activities of the group are focused on the Smart Grid components, Power Quality solutions, Power Controllers for tapping optimum energy from Non-conventional energy sources, Micro-grid for green energy villages, e-Mobility and Automotive Electronics, Real time Simulators and Emulators, Power Converters with new generation WBG Devices, Development of industrial control products like Variable Speed Drive systems, Uninterruptible Power Supply systems, High efficiency and Power density Switched Mode Power Converters, High Voltage Systems, Systems for strategic applications, High Speed Digital Controllers for Power Electronic Systems, etc. In addition to technology development projects, the group undertakes sponsored projects for specific applications from industries. The group works with a mission to evolve itself into a world-class Research Centre in Power Electronics, and at the same time catering to meet national objectives with due consideration to industrial needs and opinion of domain experts on future technology. The developments are targeted towards employing Power electronics for energy saving, eco friendly systems, quality and cost effective products and to promote the use of non-conventional energy sources available locally.

Power Electronic Group at C-DAC(T) contributes to the national level technology development in Power Electronics by functioning as the Nodal Centre for the project National Mission on Power Electronics Technology < www.nampet.in > launched by Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Govt. of India.

The strength of the group is its expertise in Power electronics and Digital control techniques built over 40 years. The group has taken keen interest in updating the knowledge base in the frontier technologies with latest innovations to meet the technological revolution and to take up new challenging tasks in the field of Power electronics. The group has generated a bunch of engineers and technicians with experience and expertise gained through working on various projects in laboratory as well as field with collaboration and active participation of varied end users and industry. The research team has kept track of the state-of-the-art technology in par with global scenario in power electronics in the development of products and systems. The group keeps close interaction with Academic institutions like Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs), National Institute of Technologies (NITs) and other premier Academic Institutes, while working in cutting edge technology developments. The design and upgradation of power circuits are linked to advances in Power semiconductor devices while Digital controllers are continuously upgraded in tune with the latest trends.
