Role of Power Electronics

Power Electronics plays an important role in any country’s industrial economy. It’s positive role on sustainable energy generation, the energy efficiency & quality of power systems, eco-friendly transport systems etc. are well accepted.

Power electronics enables

  • The efficient feeding–in of non-conventional power (solar, wind etc.) to the grid
  • Stabilization of the power grid, while the share of fluctuating renewable energy in the grid is on increase
  • Highly efficient variable speed drives for automation
  • Energy efficient and low emission mobility with Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicles
  • Energy efficient lighting etc.

Power Electronics is defined by the basic functionality to convert, control and condition electric power according to the needs of the different loads. Many market segments such as domestic and office appliances, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, factory automation and drives, traction, automotive and renewable energy, can potentially benefit from the application of power electronics technology. Acceptance of power electronics as a key technology to solve energy related challenges has caused many countries to launch large R&D programmes in the area.


Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) Govt. of India has felt the need to launch a National Mission programme on Power Electronics Technology (NaMPET) with the mission of making India a dominant player in Power Electronics. NaMPET is a multi-institutional programme involving research, development, deployment/ demonstration and technology transfer for production and commercialization of Power Electronics technology. This is implemented through a network of Academic Institutes, R&D laboratories and Industries with CDAC Thiruvananthapuram is the Nodal centre for implementation of this programe.
